Answers to questions you may never have wanted to ask
What's it all about?
This site was created to provide cryptic crosswords by Hoskins and occasionally others for your enjoyment. My crosswords aim to be entertaining, raise the occasional smile or titter, have meaningful surfaces, some nice defs, a bit of misdirection, and be fair and solvable.
When can I expect new puzzles?
Due to committments to other outlets, regular Hoskins' puzzles have ceased on this site. However, you can still currently solve some guest puzzles available in the cryptic archive (accessible from the home page).
Can I submit a grid?
Nope - though Hoskins Crosswords might occasionally post joint puzzles or puzzles from the members of DIY COW.
All crosswords on this site remain the property of their author and this site requests that you do not reproduce them elsewhere without first seeking the author's consent.
I would be happy to see my puzzles being used by certain non-profit organizations without payment (or by any profit-based organization with payment). If you are interested in using a particular puzzle, or set of puzzles, please get in contact using the site's contact page.
Can I comment?
Yes, you can. If you want to ask a question or tell me what you liked/didn't like about a particular puzzle, then please comment in the news post which announces the puzzle.
NOTE: Email is not required for a comment even though the comment interface asks for one.
You can also send me a message or see what I'm up to on Twitter by clicking here.
NOTE: to avoid spam all comments will be approved before appearing live on the site and the site reserves the right to delete any comments even after approval.
How do I get in touch?
A comment in the news page will always be read. However, if you wish to contact me privately then use the site's contact page.
I will aim to respond to all messages within 7 days. If you don't receive a response after a week, please resend as it may have been lost in mists of cyber space.
To use this site's contact form you will need to use a valid e-mail address. Hoskins Crosswords will never publish, disseminate or sell your e-mail address.
Hoskins has been compiling cryptic crosswords since January of 2013 when he started setting a 'for fun' monthly jumbo grid for a large fiction writers' website.
Currently he sets GK puzzles for The Sunday Herald (as Ned) , and cryptic puzzles of one sort or another for The Times Literary Supplement (as Talos), The Sunday Times (under his own name), The Independent and The Independent on Sunday (as Hoskins).
He also contributes to The Sunday Telegraph's Enigmatic Variations slot with Serpent under the name of Granville, The Church Times (under his own name), The Magpie, 1 Across magazine, and the 'Cryptic Crosswords: ACE vol #1' Android crossword app (all as Hoskins); has retired from setting for The National Association of Decorative & Fine Arts Society Review; won the Sunday Times clue contest, and has been twice published on Alberich Crosswords and Big Dave's Crossword Blog.
Hoskins is currently writing grids for submission, and looking for benevolent crossword editors who wield a sharp pen.
