Central and End Letter Indicators
Centre letter Examples
Sometimes, to make the answer word or part of the answer word setter needs to indicate the middle part[s] or ends of a word. To do so they'll deploy a central or ends indicator.
Here are some examples:
To go from TOWN to OW the setter may employ a central letter indicator:
middle of town ...
... here the indicator MIDDLE OF indicates the middle letters of tOWn.
To go from TOWN to TN the setter can use an ends indicator such as:
outskirts of town ...
... here the indicator OUTSKIRTS OF indicates the end letters of TowN.
Any words that fairly indicate the middle or ends of the word may be used. Here are some more examples:
central letter indicator - HEART OF/MIDDLE OF
end letters indicators - BANKS OF/ENDS OF
Finally, it is worth noting that middle letter selectors can indicate the central letter or letters of a word so ...
centre of Norwich ...
... can fairly indicate either W, RWI, and ORWIC - it will be up to the solver to see which of the possibilities fits into the answer word.
NOTE: With these clue types, you will not normally have to find a synonym before taking the indicated letters. However, as you'll see in the examples on the right hand side of the page, sometimes you will!
